Dental Growth and Development Assessment in Charlotte NC

We monitor your child's dental growth and development at routine visits and provide timely recommendations and treatment implementations to help prevent more significant problems in the future.

As part of this ongoing assessment, we evaluate the need for orthodontic treatment, tongue-tie release, space maintainers, oral habits, speech therapy referrals, and, when appropriate, medical consultations to support your child's overall oral health and development.

At Bubbles Pediatric Dentistry, each recommendation is based on your child’s age, dental development, clinical findings, comfort level, and long-term oral health needs.

Early Monitoring Helps Support Healthy Smile Development

A child’s teeth, jaws, bite, and oral habits change throughout infancy, childhood, and adolescence. Some changes are expected. Others may need closer monitoring or timely care to reduce the risk of future dental or orthodontic concerns.

A dental growth and development assessment helps the pediatric dentist evaluate how the teeth are erupting, how the bite is developing, and whether oral habits may be affecting growth. These visits also help parents understand what is normal for their child’s stage and what may need attention.

At Bubbles Pediatric Dentistry, growth assessment is part of routine pediatric dental care. The goal is to identify concerns early, guide parents clearly, and support healthy development as the child grows.

What Does a Child Dental Development Evaluation Include?

A child dental development evaluation looks at more than the teeth that are visible. The dentist may review tooth eruption, spacing, crowding, jaw growth, bite position, oral habits, tongue mobility, dental age, and clinical findings.

When needed, radiographs may be recommended to evaluate teeth that have not yet erupted, missing teeth, extra teeth, delayed eruption, or other developmental concerns. The assessment is guided by the child’s age, cooperation, symptoms, and dental history.

When should orthodontic treatment be considered.png

When Should Orthodontic Treatment Be Considered?

Orthodontic treatment is not always needed early, but some children benefit from early evaluation. A pediatric dentist may monitor crowding, spacing, bite changes, jaw growth, and eruption patterns to determine whether an orthodontic referral is appropriate.

Some concerns are simply watched over time. Others may need timely intervention to guide growth or reduce the risk of more complex treatment later. The dentist will explain whether the concern should be monitored, referred, or treated.

When Is Tongue-Tie Evaluation Recommended?

A tongue-tie may affect tongue movement, feeding, speech, breathing, oral hygiene, or other oral functions in some children. Tongue-tie and lip-tie release is not recommended for all cases. Our dental provider will recommend the treatment only when deemed necessary.

During the assessment, the dentist may review tongue mobility, oral function, parent concerns, feeding history, speech concerns, and clinical findings. When tongue-tie release is being considered, the recommendation is based on the individual child’s needs and whether treatment is expected to support function.

How Can Oral Habits Affect Dental Growth?

Oral habits can influence tooth position, bite development, jaw growth, speech patterns, and comfort. Thumb sucking, finger sucking, prolonged pacifier use, tongue habits, lip habits, and mouth breathing may need evaluation when they continue beyond the expected age.

Some children need time and encouragement. Others may benefit from a structured plan or referral. Recommendations are made only after reviewing the child’s age, habit pattern, dental findings, and readiness for change.

When Are Referrals Recommended During a Dental Growth Assessment?

Orthodontic referral

Bite, spacing, or jaw growth may need specialist evaluation

Speech therapy referral

Speech or tongue function may need further assessment

Medical consultation

Health, airway, or developmental concerns may need medical review

Feeding support

Younger children may need help with functional feeding concerns

Collaborative care

Multiple providers may support the child's overall development

How Does the Dentist Decide the Next Step?

Recommendations are based on the individual child, not on a single sign or concern. The dentist reviews age, dental growth, eruption pattern, clinical findings, radiographs when needed, oral habits, symptoms, and parent concerns before advising the next step.

Some findings may only need observation. Others may require treatment, referral, or follow-up monitoring. Parents are given a clear explanation of what was found, why it matters, and when action may be needed.

At Bubbles Pediatric Dentistry, the goal is to support healthy development with timely care and practical guidance.
